Why SunChiller

For those facilities that are intense users of air conditioning, finding an economical cooling system is essential to reduce costs and hedge against the growing risk of energy price volatility. SunChiller system, a combination of solar thermal and absorption chiller, is the optimum way to meet those needs.

Many large and small facilities across the US are already using absorption chillers for cooling. Solar thermal is a well tried method to heat water. SunChiller combines the free energy from the proven and advanced vacuum tube heat pipe solar thermal technology with the well established absorption chilling as the most practical way to meet economic cooling need and diversify the sources of energy supply.

SunChiller offers the unique combination of energy efficiency and demand reduction. When combined with long-term finance business model, it is more cost-effective than conventional systems.

Additional savings in heating

SunChiller system can provide savings in fossil fuel cost for space heating during the cold season. Facilities always have a need for domestic hot water throughout the year. SunChiller system can also reduce the cost of fossil fuels spent on domestic hot water.

Optimum hybrid solar and electric chiller plants
Respective low operating and capital costs of SunChiller and electric chiller can be used in optimum combination. During the peak demand period when the demand charges and electric rates are high the hybrid plant uses SunChiller as the lead and electric chiller as the lag or back-up. During the off-peak hours when electric demand charges and rates are low, the electric chillers are used. Thus, hybrid plants provide the capability to avoid on-peak demand charges and deal with volatile and uncertain energy rates. Hybrid plants also provide the capability to negotiate for best Time of Use (TOU) rate in the deregulated electric energy market.

Advanced and proven solar technology

SunChiller uses the advanced vacuum tube heat pipe solar thermal technology enabling hot water temperature of up to 205°F essential to efficient cooling.

Friendly to environment

SunChiller system uses water as a natural, environmentally benign refrigerant and does not emit any air pollutants. As the lifecycle of chiller is over 20 years, SunChiller hedges against the risk of changing regulations.

Opportunity for solar tax credit and accelerated depreciation

Federal solar tax credit of 10% (30% effective January 1, 2006) plus 5-year accelerated depreciation are available to make investment in SunChiller system more attractive.

Maintenance contracts and warranties

With highly automated operation and few moving parts, the SunChiller system’s two key components - absorption chiller and solar collectors - are quiet and require minimal maintenance. Extended maintenance contracts and warranties are available.
